A notice was added to B Lab's website in February 2024 to respond to questions in some markets about the nature of B Corp Certification, specifically: Is B Corp Certification issued or endorsed by a government entity?
As of May 6, 2024, all B Corps with operations in Italy must place this disclaimer on their websites in the section where the B Corp status is first disclosed. If you use the Certified B Corporation logo on your homepage or in the footer of your website, either include the full language adjacent to the logo or add a prominent link beneath the logo that says "Certification Notice" and takes users to a page where the disclaimer is readily visible — for example, a page describing your B Corp Certification.
Other B Corps may also reproduce this notice on their own websites if they wish to provide additional clarity on the legal nature of B Corp Certification and its relationship to EU regulations.
Certification Notice
“Certified B Corporation” is a trademark licensed by B Lab, a private non-profit organization, to companies like ours that have successfully completed the B Impact Assessment (“BIA”) and therefore meet the requirements set by B Lab for social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
It is specified that B Lab is not a conformity assessment body as defined by Regulation (EU) No 765/2008, nor is it a national, European, or international standardization body as per Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012. The criteria of the BIA are distinct and independent from the harmonized standards resulting from ISO norms or other standardization bodies, and they are not ratified by national or European public institutions.
