Glossary
B Corp Month
B Corp Month is an annual global campaign to increase awareness about the B Corp movement. Held in March, it’s an opportunity for our network and community to host events, speak about their journey and experiences, and celebrate their commitment. B Lab shares a B Corp Month toolkit each year, with a specific theme and ideas for creating your own content.
B Impact™
B Impact™ is B Lab’s digital platform, designed to help businesses measure, manage, and improve their impact—whether you're working toward B Corp Certification, tracking progress against sustainability goals, or managing your company's social and environmental performance. It was previously known as B Impact Assessment™.
B Global Network
The B Global Network consists of B Lab Global and Global Partners, including Sistema B™ in Latin America. Together, this network of organizations leads economic systems change to support our collective vision of an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.
B Lab Standards
B Lab Standards (Estándares de B Lab in Latin America) define social, environmental, and governance best practices for businesses. Based on stakeholder input, research, and established best practices, they are the foundation for everything our network does, from B Corp Certification to policy work worldwide.
Benefit Corporations
Benefit corporations are a type of legal structure for businesses in the United States that create a solid foundation for long-term mission alignment and stakeholder value creation. Some companies are both Certified B Corporations and benefit corporations, but they are not the same thing. You can read more about benefit corporations here.
Impact Business Models
Impact Business Models (IBMs) are the ways that a business is intentionally designed to create a specific positive outcome for a stakeholder group. Examples include companies providing services to preserve or restore natural environments; those donating an essential product for every sale; or intentionally hiring and training individuals from underemployed populations to support social progress.
Impact Topics
B Lab Standards require businesses to take meaningful action across seven key social, environmental, and governance Impact Topic areas: Fair Work; Climate Action; Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion; Governance & Collective Action; Environmental Stewardship & Circularity; Purpose & Stakeholder Governance; and Human Rights.
In-Scope Brands
Brands that fall under the Licence Scope, and are included in the company’s signed License Agreement with B Lab.
Regenerative Economy
In a regenerative economy, the planet remains stable and can sustain life. For example, ensuring all people can access basic resources like food and health, live peacefully, and be protected from planetary harm. In order to achieve this, restoring and regenerating natural resources is critical.
Theory of Change
The B Global Network’s Theory of Change is the mission that guides us to transform the economic system into a more inclusive, equitable, and regenerative global economy. You can read it in full here.
